Youth and Young Adult Faith Ministries
Teen Dimensions (Grade 6-8) & Faith Exploration (Grade 9-12) Teen Dimensions & Faith Exploration is a welcoming program for the youth held during Sunday service led by the youth minister, Shannon MacLean. Youth join the congregation at 10 AM for part of the worship and then gather in the white church to build Christian community. The group offers a friendly atmosphere for youth to explore and develop their relationship with God through activities, PowerPoint presentations, video clips and discussion. This group also leads worship for special worship services several times a year.
Junior Youth Group (Grade 6-8) The Jr Youth Group meets once a month on Friday evening 6:30-8:00 PM in our new GAMES ROOM (basement of the White Church)! This is a casual evening for building friendships, playing board games, video games, ping-pong, air hockey, watching movies, eating snacks and having fun. Bring a snack to share.... bring a friend.... and come on out for a great night filled with laughter. Go to the Woodlawn calendar tab for dates.
Senior Youth Group (Grade 9-12) The Sr Youth Group comes together every couple weeks on Sunday evenings 6:30-8:00 PM in our youth room in the White Church. This group meets to discuss topics that are important to youth today. We explore different topics using creativity, activities, video clips, games, discussions and sometimes “field trips”. We occasionally spend some time relaxing in the GAMES room as well! Go to the Woodlawn calendar tab for dates.
JOINT Youth Group Events Every couple of months we have been getting together with other United Church Youth Groups in the area. This is a great way to share in activities and widen our circle of friends. Hopefully this will grow even more into something that unites many youth on their journey of faith.
Fundraisers The youth at Woodlawn ran a Woodlawn IDOL in February, 2010. The acts were fantastic, the spaghetti was very tasty and the judges were hysterical! In the process we were able to raise about $800! We plan on holding another one next year
Confirmation Classes When many of us were infants our parents chose to celebrate the sacrament of baptism. They made promises on our behalf that we would live Christian lives and grow in a community of faith where we celebrate God’s presence, live with respect in creation, and love and serve others. Once old enough, youth can renew those promises on their own behalf by being confirmed into this congregation of Woodlawn United. The confirmation classes are faith development experiences that invite youth to explore concrete ways to practice Christianity in everyday life; to understand themselves as part of a community of people who don’t just go with the flow: a community that gathers around Jesus' radical way of being in the world.
The decision to be confirmed is a personal one that can be done when you feel ready to discuss some of the big questions in life. Confirmation classes for youth (grade 9 and up) are generally held in the winter, please contact Shannon MacLean for more info contact: shannon.maclean@woodlawnunited.ca
Maritime Conference Youth Forum Youth Forum is a United Church event for teenagers, between the ages of Grade 10 and 19, from across the Maritimes, the Gaspé and Bermuda. Together, a safe community of over one hundred teens is formed, and gathered as one in the name of Christ.
Youth Forum explores the issues related to the teenage Christians in today's world and the impact they can make on the lives of congregations in the United Church of Canada. Together youth explore and reflect on the connections between their faith and daily living.
During a weekend of youth-relevant themes, music, worship and fun, Youth Forum explores what it means to have faith in God, while being part of a wider community set in a caring, spirit-filled environment. This event is held every May in Sackville, NB during Maritime Conference.
