Back to school is, for many parents, “the most wonderful time of the year”. For many others, it is a time of stress and anxiety, where extra costs place a financial hardship on already stretched budgets. For those changing schools, from elementary to junior or from junior to high school, this can be even more socially traumatizing. If children do not feel confident or excited to learn, their educational experience may be compromised. It costs, on average, about $50 per child to fill a backpack with all of the needed supplies required by their schools.
Our own Dartmouth East Christian Food Bank is one of the community organizations who aim to provide needed school supplies to elementary, junior and high school children. We are currently collecting school supplies to fill backpacks. If you have or would like to donate any of the following items, please feel free to drop off at the office Monday to Friday 9-3, or leave in the box outside the office (marked School Supplies). We will collect items until the end of August. Pat Rodenhizer will then distribute to families in need via the Food Bank.
Top 12 Most Needed School Supplies: #2 pencils, Crayons (8 pack only please), Basic blue or black ink pens, Coloured pencils, Coloured markers, Glue, Paper (Looseleaf), Scribblers, Duo Tangs, Scissors, Erasers, Notebooks.
